D. C. Joshi
Abstract:A general solution of the phenomenon of imbibition which arises in the flow of two immiscible liquids through porous media due to difference in the wetting abilities of liquids has been discussed. Here the saturation of injected liquid in terms of the hypergeometric functions 0F1 is obtained.

Ritz solution of the one dimensional flow in unsaturated porous media
D. C. Joshi
Abstract:The present paper discusses a general solution of the one dimensional unsteady flow through porous media by using Ritz method. The mathematical formulation gives a non-linear partial differential equation which is transformmed into ordinary differential equation (ode) with the help of similarity variables. An alternative general solution is obtained by Ritz method for ode. We have
assumed that the permeability of the medium as a specific linear function of moisture content and time.

Exploring the Applicability of a Relative Entropy Measure for Assessment of Dynamical Market Prediction Utility
Sukanto Bhattacharya* and Srikrishna Samanta**
Abstract:In this paper we firstly extend the binary, stochastic model of a generalized securities market proposed by Bhattacharya in 2001 by lifting a restraining assumption regarding equality of diagonal elements of the market state-transition matrix. This extension allows the model to realistically accommodate market efficiency prediction in a time-dynamic scenario. We subsequently explore the contextual relevance of applying a relative entropy measure as proposed by Kleeman in 2002 to assess the utility of such market prediction.
Key words : Market efficiency, Markov state-switching models, Von Neumann-Morgenstern games, prediction utility, relative entropy measure

The free convective mhd flow and heat transfer through a porous medium bounded by a moving infinite vertical porous plate with constant heat flux
S. Ahmed and N. Ahmed*
Abstract: The free convective MHD flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid through a porous medium, occupying a semi-infinite region of the space bounded by a uniformly moving infinite vertical porous plate with constant heat flux has been analysed. A uniform magnetic field and the suction velocity applied normal to the plate. The equations governing the fluid flow and heat transfer have been solved subject to the relevant boundary conditions by perturbation technique. The expressions for the velocity profile, temperature profile and the heat transfer have been evaluated numerically for several sets of values of the various parameters entering into the problem and shown graphically.

A model for knee joint articulation
P. N. Tandon, Amita Chaurasia*, Rekha Bali and A. K. Shukla
Abstract: A two region flow model has been developed for the better understanding of synovial joint lubrication mechanism, employing the mixture theory of two interacting continua for the poroelastic cartilage surfaces. The problem has been solved using the basic assumptions of lubrication theory. Introducing the viscosity of the synovial fluids depending on local concentration of the suspended hyaluronic acid molecules, squeeze film analysis has been considered. We conclude that nomally loaded knee joints are capable of generating the fluid film for the longer period of the gait cycle leading to boundary lubrication for a very short duration. When the surface come closure the increase in concentration increases the viscosity of synovial fluid which, in turn, increases the load carrying capacity as well as closure time. In diseased joints, this time is small as compared to that in normal subjects due to the decrease in H.A.M. concentration because of biochemical reactions and/or destruction of the Molecule.

System of n-series equations involving series of jacobi and laguerre polynomials
A. P. Dwivedi, Jyotsna Chandel and Poonam Bajpai
Abstract: The solution of n-series equations involving series of Jacobi and Laguerre polynomials has been obtained by reducing them to simultaneous Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Results of similar n-series equations involving Laguerre polynomials have also been obtained by applying a limit process.

Control of the temperature set points in oil refinery using fuzzy expert systems
S. R. Kannan
Abstract:An appropriate method to control the temperature set point in an oil refinery is very important one to get a constant percentage of distillation for expected time periods. The desired set point of temperature in an oil refinery is used to ensure constant percentage of distillation for expected time periods. Oil that comes from the ground is called the “crude oil”. By cooking, the crude is converted into useful oil. Here, the temperature set point plays a vital role at the time of cooking the crude oil. Since the quality and quantity of the crude is dependent on the temperature set point, the crude oil refinery has different temperature set points to distil different crude. Usually the set point of temperature in oil refinery is chosen by randomly from the range of temperature set point. But the random choice not gives a constant percentage with good quality of distillation of expected time periods. Since control of the temperature set point in an oil refinery is very essential one to ensure constant percentage of distillation for expected time periods, so this paper introduces Fuzzy Expert Systems (FES) to control temperature set point. Here the appropriate temperature set points, percentage of distillation and time periods are considered as parameters of fuzzy expert systems and the membership functions are defined for the input and output parameters to ensure constant percentage of distillation for expected time periods. Fuzzy rules are obtained using logic rules and the desired set points of temperature are obtained.

Unsteady mhd flow and heat transfer along a continuous porous moving vertical porous surface in the presence of an oscillating free stream and heat source
P.R. Sharma, Y.N. Gaur* and R.P. Sharma**
Abstract : Ohmic dissipation effect on unsteady boundary layer flow and heat transfer of an incompressible, viscous electrically conducting fluid along a continuous moving horizontal non-conducting porous surface in the presence of transverse magnetic field, an oscillating free stream and volumetric rate of heat generation (or absorption) is investigated, neglecting induced magnetic field incomparision to the applied magnetic field. The velocity and temperature distributions are derived, discussed numerically and shown through Figures 1 and 2, respectively. The expressions of skin-friction coefficient and rate of heat transfer in terms of the Nusselt number at the surface are derived, discussed numerically and their numerical values for various values of physical parameters are presented through Table 1 and 2, respectively.
