Preface

Environmentalism is a fairly new movement in the world in recent years.  Today no development project is considered complete without an environmental impact assessment.  The assessment includes eutrophication, pollution from urban and industrial discharge, heavy metal pollution, pesticides and their effect on aquatic life.

With expanding human activities, pollution of the environment is a natural corollary.  Plants & trees help in keeping the environment clear and maintaining the natural balance.  A clean and healthy environment can not be imagined without plants and trees.

Fresh water which is one of the essential requirements of life, provides substance to plants and animals, constitutes the habitat for aquatic organisms and meets important agricultural and industrial needs.  Fresh water resources undergo both seasonal and yearly fluctuations and are subject to human interferences leading to changes in their physical and biological qualities.

Plant nutrients are a natural and essential foundation of biological production in land waters.  Continued man made additions of these nutrients result in heavy growths of microscopic plants which are undesirable from several points of view.  Such over enrichment can be traced to nutrient supply from drainage containing agricultural fertilizers and domestic sewage.

Many eminent individuals contributed the articles for the book, their efforts are highly appreciated.  many of colleagues and friends to whom I am indebted for their critical comments and helpful suggestions have aided greatly in bringing up this book in the present form.

I, particularly want to thank Mr. Naseer Khan of Hira Computers for the neat execution of the work on computer and Mr. Rais Khan for flawless typing of the manuscripts and their help in various ways.

I take this opportunity to thank my colleagues Dr. S.S.Khan and Dr. Mohini Saxena for taking much strain and stress in helping me wholeheartedly during this work.  Without their help the work would have been in half way through.

Finally I want to thank my family (Mrs. Parveen Ansari and Atif Aziz) who not only tolerated my obsession with editing of this book but also kept congenial atmosphere at home for the accomplishment of this task.
